Sip a drink during altitude changes when on the plane. Should work on the ground too. The idea is just to get some air into (or out of) your eustachian tubes to equalise the pressure behind your ear.
And by the way, any parents or soon-to-be parents reading this, it's imperative that you give small children a bottle to drink during altitude changes on a plane, even if you don't normally bottle-feed, because otherwise they can't equalise the pressures.

I had that a few years back. Stay hydrated, use a warm moist washcloth on your ear, and wait. It usually goes away in a day or so. I checked in with my doctor afterwards, and they gave me a nasal spray, to take before flying. (Afrin maybe?)
Good luck, I know that it is really annoying.
